Critical geoeconomics: A genealogy of writing politics, economy and space

Abstract Towards the end of Cold War, vocabulary global power, space and economy received a qualitative update. Amongst terms rapidly gaining prominence since early 1990s has been notion geoeconomics, coining which frequently attributed to strategist Edward N. Luttwak. In his interpretation, it signified transition away from War ideological military geopolitical competition towards commerce market‐based geo‐power. Over past three decades, ‘geoeconomics boom’ set in, characterised by think tanks varied body politico‐economic literature making extensive use term. Conventionally treated as neologism, provenance earlier iterations some dating back more than century, have largely ignored both celebratory critical accounts. this paper, we trace contextualise these instances, leading us Geopolitik era in Germany references geoeconomics United States decades after WWII. We thereby offer genealogy conceptualised an object definitional struggle. Proponents term sought position variously tool national economic cohesion or way understanding harnessing shifting power relations, whilst others subsume geopolitics.
